Fog thicker than peanut butter

I love fog....as long as I don't have to drive in it. Mountains peaks sticking out of the fog, early morning cornfields with a low hanging blanket of the white stuff, or a misty morning at the beach all constitute some of my favorite landscapes. Fog can be dangerous though.

In 2014, Tracie and I participated in a "Weekend to Remember" at Ocean City Maryland. The main principle with these weekends is for couples to spend meaningful time together. (Time that does not include watching TV or sleep.) Our weekend was plagued by rain and overcast skies. Not your perfect days at the beach.

On one particular morning, we walked to the beach (in the dense fog) and lamented the fact we couldn't see much. Sounds of all kinds were coming to us through the fog and we tried to distinguish what each one might be. Waves lapping the shore was easy. An occasional vehicle driving the streets behind us was easy. And then to our left, we could see two lights approaching us. The slow movement of these orbs seemed to mesmorize me. The noise grew louder and louder until Tracie and I realized it was a piece of heavy equipment driving right up the beach straight at us! It was one sound I should have easily identified yet did not. We both ran back up the beach and away from the approaching work crew. The operator was oblivious to our presence until he was in front of us. As this parade of equipment and men drove by, we were thankful the machines didn't move quicker.

How often have we walked with awe and wonder in foggy venues drinking in the moment not realizing the danger and beauty that might exist even though we can't see it? In some ways, it's akin to living without a growing relationship with Jesus Christ. We enjoy the scenery and may even walk near Jesus (beauty), but he is obscured by fogs of busyness (danger). Our attention is divided by extraneous things and the one who loves us and died for our sins gets missed in the process. Thankfully, Jesus said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12b, NIV) Let's follow Him today.
