Such a doubting optimist"

Oxy-morons are so much fun! I mean think of why we park our car in a 'drive' way and drive on a 'parkway'. Why is there such a thing as jumbo-shrimp? Can the wisest man who ever lived be so short-sighted? This morning in Ecclesiastes 9, (a book of the Bible attributed to King Solomon, I came across this positively negative approach to life....

So, how is your pointless life going for you? Hmmmm, how can the man who was perhaps the wisest and richest person to ever live be able to spew out such drivel? Could it be true that those who are incredibly rich and wise and those who own a lot of things are human beings who might depend less on faith and trust in God? Solomon had it all and yet looked around and decided he really had nothing.

Solomon did not have knowledge or perspective of Jesus Christ and subsequently viewed things from a superficial plane. If he had known about God becoming human and living amongst humanity, he would have reworded his Wisdom writings. Roll that thought around in your mind for a second. Jesus is fully human and fully divine..... How can that be? I had a conversation with a friend recently and they confessed they did not believe in the Trinity. Curious. I silently recited the beginning of the 'Apostle's Creed',

"I believe in God, the Father almighty,creator of heaven and earth.I believe in Jesus Christ, his only

Son, our Lord,who was conceived by the Holy Spirit," (Common Worship)

We are saved sinners! Sinners are supposed to be cursed and die but not in God's kingdom. Folks who live life apart from the 'Jesus' perspective can't see any hope and therefore live lives that reflect their beliefs....or lack of them. While it is true that our time on this earth is a breath and then eternity, it is also true that a life lived without purpose is meaningness. Maybe that's why Solomon was such a "Debbie Downer". He was missing the eternal perspective.
