From ordinary to extraordinary.

Some days we feel like spoons. Hey buddy, speak for yourself!

No, really, some days I don't feel especially important. I'm a utensil sitting in a proverbial kitchen drawer waiting to be used for some mundane task. I get soiled, I need washed. I'm then put back in the drawer to await the next task. I'm useful in an ordinary way. I'm okay with mundane and ordinary. There are days and even moments however when I suspect God desires to help us see our position in His Kingdom as extraordinary creations. The tension point for most of us is allowing God to take our ordinary and crank it up a notch or two. The other day, my view of spoons and feeling like a spoon fell out of the drawer. Our son came home and offered his mom a Mother's Day gift. Wow!!

At first mom, fawned over the gift and said how beautiful it is, then I mentioned that it was made out of spoons. She stopped and looked closer and saw the same thing I did. A craftsman cut the handles off of at least a dozen or more spoons, heated the lip and bent it slightly, then welded each spoon carefully to a metal rod. The process to create this image doesn't sound flattering. Cutting, bending, accepting intense heat, and maybe even some pounding is involved in this change of purpose. Yet, when you hold this ornate gift you appreciate the craftsman's skill and the creativity to take a mundane instrument and turn it into something that makes you take a second look.

On a day so long ago, a group of people sat in a room praying and waiting for something amazing to occur. They were ordinary fishermen, tax collectors, tradesmen, and common workers. Nothing really to see or get excited about in this group. Then, BOOM!

"When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing

of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what

seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with

the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. (Acts 2:1-4, NIV)

In a heartbeat, these ordinary utensils of God's creating turned into something extraordinary and ornate. They became filled with the Holy Spirit and would influence the world as they knew it for Jesus Christ. Talk about a metamorphosis!

Today, if you are feeling quite ordinary and muddling through life, stop and allow the creative hand of God to grasp your life. If all you know is a narrow view of your usefulness and can see no other possibilities, stop and wait for God's perfect will for you to be revealed. You'll never be the same.
