- "A Musing Pastor"
Guarding the door.
I must be part rabbit. I love lettuce, spinach, and greens of all kinds! Unfortunately, so do rabbits. The garden I planted a few months ago is (was) doing well. Watering, tilling, and weed pulling have produced a flourishing place for potatoes, tomatoes, and such to grow.
Having seen more than a few rabbits hopping around the backyard, I decided to fence the garden to keep green loving bunnies at bay. I bought the fencing, found a few posts and proceeded to enclose the area. I came up about 2 feet short of full protection. I figured a rabbit would have to be Sherlock Holmes to search the perimeter to find this opening. (You are correct, Watson!)
A week ago when I left for upper New York, the lettuce and spinach were full and in need of cutting. I planned to harvest when I returned the other day. To my disbelief, every row of green succulent yumminess was gone. Riddled by some unseen shredder.

Ever heard the expression, "Locking the barn door after the horse has been stolen."? Yeah, well that would be me. I did procure a short piece of fence on Monday to close the opening to my garden. Grrrrr!
Yesterday, I walked past the door and saw the most plumb rabbit I have ever seen. It was sitting right by the garden fencing. It was quite bold! Humph! Found the BB gun, loaded it, opened the door, and gave Mr. / Mrs. bunny a parting shot to the rump. Off he/she went. Last I saw, it was over in the neighbor's yard.
Got me to thinking about my heart and mind. Have I set a fence of protection around them to keep the devil from intruding? Or, have I enclosed them a little and left an access point unguarded? Evil is all around us and it seems to plague us with pain, suffering, and destruction. Satan has no interest in us other than to kill, steal, and destroy us.
"Cast all your anxiety on 'God' because he cares for you. Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil
prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith,
because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings."
(1 Peter 5:7-9, NIV)
How about you, are you guarding your heart and keeping evil at bay? Hope so. Are there telltale signs of a weak spot in your faith. Double check the perimeter and close those access points where Satan might enter in.
"Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life." (Proverbs 4:23, NIV)
