Been with Jesus lately?
Had a pot roast for dinner last evening. Around 1 PM, I threw the roast, some water, sliced peppers, four chopped onions, some garlic powder, pepper, and a dash of salt in the pan. It simmered on the stovetop for about four hours. The aroma permeated the entire upper level of the house.
As I worked on the sermon for Sunday then refreshed my mind for the evening Bible study, I thought nothing of the clothes I wore and how they were absorbing the smells of peppers, onions, and such. Once one encounters a smell for a while, we tend to not notice the smell. We sort of get 'nose blind' to odors. No, this is not a commercial for room air fresheners. Well, anyway, as I rushed out the door for Bible study, it never occurred to me that I carried a unique smell.
It wasn't till I entered a new environment at the church that has its own aromas that I began to notice a smell of food flavors. (Probably explains why nobody sat close to me during the study...) Honestly, the aroma in our home was delectable, but at the church and on my clothes it changed.
Anyone who wasn't suffering from nasal congestion could tell I had been around some kind of food being cooked. Nobody mentioned by unusual fragrance (odor). They were either very gracious or maybe, just maybe, they enjoyed the smell.
When we spend time with Jesus and read daily scripture, it flavors the day ahead of us. We act differently, talk differently, see things in our world differently. We speak with boldness mixed with humility and grace. We can look at conditions in the world and know with great assurance that God is in control and is not surprised by humanity's crass natures.
Two disciples, Peter and John, lived in a virulent time in history and they walked boldly in their faith. They did not waver in the face of adversity. They proclaimed their faith even though they would suffer greatly for doing so.
"Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we
must be saved.” When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled,
ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus."
(Acts 4:12-13, NIV)
When Peter and John said, "Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.” it set the tone for those nearby to acknowledge a difference maker in the lives of these unschooled people. How about you, are you spending quality and quantity time with Jesus each day? Are you trusting in His work and word? Is your meditation time flavoring your words and actions? Do you live your faith boldly and with great conviction in the face of a virulent world. (Oops, I used virulent twice in this blog)
Virulent - (adj.) poisonous, toxic, venomous, noxious, deadly, lethal, vitriolic, malicious, malevolent, hostile,
spiteful (Oxford Dictionary)
It is easy to become jaded and bitter in our world, but God calls us to rise above this lifestyle choice. I hope you are daily equipping your heart and mind with scriptural holiness then living in a way that causes others to say, "These folks have been with Jesus."
