- A Musing Pastor
"Master Creator!"
When considering all that I have seen in my small part of the world, I'm always humbled to think of all the beauty I have not seen. The peaks of the Rockies and the shores of New England are just two of thousands of destinations on my bucket list. Will I ever empty the bucket? I sure hope not. It is in exploring and scaling new heights and places that sharpen the image of God for me that can be so nebulous at times for many. In the simplest tree toad, I see God's creativity and then there is the plethora of flowers, birds, sea creatures and mammals that are as diverse as the sky is blue.

Psalm 8:1 O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens. From the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise because of your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger. When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him? You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor. You made him ruler over the works of your hands; you put everything under his feet: all flocks and herds, and the beasts of the field, the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas. O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth.
When David wrote Psalm 8, he must have been awed by the expanse of sky, the beauty of nature, and the wonder of humanity. We should be as well. If God can place the heavenly bodies in place and then have the sovereignty to name them, that should make us feel small. It makes me feel insignificant. Then I am reminded that this God of indescribable nature seeks to have us near and in relationship. God places great responsibility into our hands to steward the creation that surrounds us. That is a good feeling. How is this possible? David must have had a sense about this because he mentions it here in the Psalm.
"what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him? You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor. You made him ruler over the works of your hands; you put everything under his feet: all flocks and herds, and the beasts of the field, the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas."
Take some time today or in the next few days to appreciate all that God's hands have made and see if you don't reconnect your heart with the Divine. It is possible only because God has made it so.
