What is green and contains potassium, calcium, magnesium, vitamin C, vitamin K, glucoraphanin, beta carotene, zinc, selenium, indole-3-carbinol, fiber, carotenoid lutein, vitamin A, vitamin B6, and folate? If you said a green vitamin, you'd have been correct (sort of).
If you said broccoli , you'd have been more accurate.
This close-up image of the green vegetable doesn't look so compelling that we would run to grab and eat it. In fact, it looks like something one might avoid. Love it or hate it, it's good for our bodies. I can eat it raw or steamed. Oh, and did I mention broccoli can be used as an emergency breath freshener? Just have to be sure a few green specks aren't still lodged between your teeth and you'll be good to go...
Healthy bodies are good but healthy souls are better still. The image of broccoli above isn't very attractive and in many ways is like the prophetic description of Jesus listed here.
"He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.
He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering. Like one from whom
men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not." (Isaiah 53:2b-3, NIV)
I meet many who have bumped into Jesus Christ and have fled in haste. Not because of any artist's representation of Christ but more for sin's guilt and shame each holds in their soul. Jesus is the Rx for our soul issues. He is like the super enriched food broccoli; maybe not much to look at but full of healthy soul benefits.
Maybe you have befriended Jesus and realized a newness. The love of Christ has pushed out anger, bitterness, and frustration. His grace has reminded you of your great need and his great provision. Perhaps Jesus has removed blemishes left behind by your sin and you stand before him as a renewed child of God. You become a great advertisement for God's great mercy and grace.
How about the reader here today who still holds onto fear, doubt, and distrust? Is it possible for your soul to be cared for by Jesus? Better question would be, "Are you ready to call upon Jesus to help you?" The human race was never designed to carry burdens that threaten our relationship with God. God has offered one who is qualified to carry the burdens of the world....it's Jesus.
"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and
learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls."
(Matthew 11:28-29, NIV)
Stop trying to fix yourself and stop trying to carry the world on your shoulders. Start feasting on God's word and fill your mind with truth and wisdom. Digest the precepts and holy guidance found in scripture. You'll experience Jesus and you'll experience soul health like never before. Maybe your breath will be refreshed too!
"Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the man (and woman) who takes refuge in him."
(Psalm 34:8, NIV)
